My experience This is not a technical comparison between inline skating and running, despite the stats being very impressive for energy expenditure, muscular development, and impact control. Nothing pleases me more than to be flying on my skates! Feeling the power in my sprint strides, the rip of my crossovers, the shuddering vibration of my edges as they shred the surface beneath me. That's skating! That's fun! And that, above all else, is the reason I do it. The fact that inline skating burns virtually as many calories per hour as running, will build an impressive set of legs and buns, will test and improve the strength of my heart and lungs, is easy on my joints, and is one the best mood elevators I know, are all wonderful biproducts. But the fact is, I do this because I love it! I do also run, and it would be false to claim I get nothing from it. But my motivation for running is very different, I run to keep my cardiovascular health in check, but I generally only run when there is no opportunity to skate.
